Lab Director

Jared P. Dempsey, Ph.D.

Dr. Dempsey’s doctoral research and clinical training was completed at Texas Tech University under the supervision of Dr. Lee M. Cohen (Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory).  In addition to general adult clinical psychology training, emphases included behavioral medicine practicum in numerous medical settings. Additionally, clinical training included a strong neuropsychological assessment focus, under the supervision of Dr. Patricia B. Sutker.  Doctoral research focused on psychophysiological assessment of drug-cue reactivity, among nicotine dependent individuals.  This work confirmed that drug cues induce a pleasant reaction, which can be assessed physiologically, using Affective Modulation of the Startle Reflex (2007).

Dr. Dempsey then continued his clinical residency and post-doctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina.  During this time he continued training in behavioral medicine and treatment of a wide variety of substance use disorders.  Research training was supervised by Dr. Carrie Randall, at the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs, and focused on self-medication of psychological disorders.  In 2007, Dr. Dempsey was awarded his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.
